How to remove bike chain oil from clothes
Updated · By the Luniva team
Quick answer
Use Luniva Pro Formula (the blue one). Spray it directly onto the stain, leave it for 1–3 minutes, then wash as normal following the garment care label.
Roll or tuck your right trouser leg before you ride. If you do get a mark, treat it the same day: fresh chain oil comes out far more easily than an old, dried one.
Step by step
- 1
Lift off the excess
Dab away any loose grime with kitchen roll. Don't rub: it spreads the oil.
- 2
Spray directly
Spray Luniva Pro Formula onto the mark until it's covered, in a well-ventilated area. Ready to use: never add water.
- 3
Wait 1–3 minutes
Leave it to work. Don't let it dry on the fabric.
- 4
Wash as normal
Wash with your usual detergent, following the care label. Air-dry and check before tumble drying: heat can set any oily residue.
Safe handling for Pro Formula
- Use in a well-ventilated area. Open a window or run an extractor fan.
- Keep away from open flames, sparks and hot surfaces while spraying.
- Avoid spraying towards the face or eyes. Wear household gloves for prolonged use.
- Keep out of reach of children. Wash hands after handling.
Chain oil is the cyclist's stain: a black smear on the right trouser leg, a sock or a jacket after a ride or fixing a puncture. It's oil and grime, so it's a job for Luniva Pro Formula: spray, wait 1–3 minutes, then wash as normal.
Why chain oil marks are so black and so stubborn
Bike chain lube is designed to cling to metal, and as the chain runs it picks up road dirt and tiny metal particles, which is what makes the mark so dark. Oil repels water, so a normal wash spreads it rather than lifting it. Pro Formula is not an enzyme product. It uses grease-releasing chemistry and surfactants to loosen oily deposits from washable fabric fibres so they can be carried away in the wash.
Fabric guide
Recommended
Cotton, polyester, polycotton, denim, canvas, heavy workwear and most colour-fast everyday garments, towels and bedding.
Avoid
Silk, wool, leather, suede, rayon/viscose, acetate, delicate synthetics, waterproof membranes (e.g. Gore-Tex), flame-retardant finishes, and anything whose care label warns against solvents.
Patch-test first
Spray a hidden area such as an inside seam, leave 1–3 minutes, rinse and let it dry. If you see colour loss, stiffness or surface change, don't use it on that garment.
Use it on its own
Ready to use: never add water. Never mix with bleach, ammonia, acidic cleaners or other detergents. Don't let it dry on the fabric.
Bike chain oil: questions
Often, yes. Old, dried oil may need a second treatment. Re-spray, leave 1–3 minutes and wash again rather than leaving one application on longer.
Pro Formula isn't for waterproof membranes, flame-retardant finishes or delicate synthetics, so check the care label first. It's for washable fabrics like cotton, denim and polyester.
Blue. Chain oil is an oily stain, which is what Pro Formula is for. Enzyme Powered is for food, drink and body stains.
For heavy oil, yes: washing them on their own stops the grime spreading to the rest of the load.
Based on controlled laboratory testing. Performance may vary by stain type, fabric, age of the stain and wash conditions. Always follow the garment care label and test an inconspicuous area first.
