UK washing symbols explained

Care labels in the UK use the same set of symbols across Europe: a washing tub, a triangle, a square, an iron and a circle. Each shape covers one part of looking after the garment, and dots, numbers, lines and crosses tell you the limits. Once you know the five shapes, any label makes sense.

The washing tub: washing

  • Tub with a number (30, 40, 60…)

Machine wash at up to that temperature in °C. Some labels use dots instead: one dot is 30°C, two is 40°C, three is 50°C, four is 60°C.

  • One line under the tub

Use a gentler cycle, such as synthetics or easy-care.

  • Two lines under the tub

Use a very gentle cycle, such as wool or delicates.

  • Hand in the tub

Hand wash only, in water no warmer than about 40°C.

  • Tub with a cross

Do not wash. Usually means dry clean only.

The triangle: bleach

  • Empty triangle

    Any bleach can be used.

  • Triangle with two diagonal lines

    Only non-chlorine (oxygen) bleach.

  • Triangle with a cross

Do not use any bleach. Luniva's sprays are bleach-free, but always follow the label.

The square: drying

  • Square with a circle

Tumble dry. One dot means low heat, two dots normal heat.

  • Square with a crossed-out circle

    Do not tumble dry.

  • Curved line at the top of the square

    Line dry.

  • Three vertical lines

Drip dry: hang it up wet, without spinning or wringing.

  • One horizontal line

Dry flat, which stops knitwear stretching.

  • Diagonal lines in the top corner

Dry in the shade, away from direct sunlight.

The iron: ironing

  • One dot

Cool iron (about 110°C), for delicate synthetics.

  • Two dots

Warm iron (about 150°C), for wool and polyester blends.

  • Three dots

Hot iron (about 200°C), for cotton and linen.

  • Iron with a cross

    Do not iron.

The circle: professional cleaning

  • Circle with a letter (P, F or W)

Instructions for a professional cleaner: P and F are types of dry-cleaning solvent, W is professional wet cleaning.

  • Circle with a cross

    Do not dry clean.

Before you treat a stain

Read the label first. Luniva's sprays are for washable fabrics: if a garment says do not wash or dry clean only, take it to a professional cleaner instead. Pro Formula isn't for silk, wool, leather, waterproof membranes or flame-retardant finishes.

Top tips

  • If a label is missing or faded, wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle and dry flat or on a line.
  • Cut labels off carefully at the seam, or not at all: once they're gone, so are the instructions.
  • When two garments' labels disagree, wash them separately.

One dot in the washing tub means a cool wash at up to 30°C. Two dots is 40°C, three is 50°C and four is 60°C.

It's the tumble dry symbol. One dot inside means low heat, two dots means normal heat, and a cross through it means do not tumble dry.

Luniva's sprays are bleach-free. Follow the rest of the care label and test on a hidden area first if you're unsure. Pro Formula isn't for silk, wool, leather, membranes or flame-retardant finishes.

Hand wash only, in water no warmer than about 40°C. Some machines have a hand-wash cycle that's suitable, so check the label and your machine's instructions.
