How to remove urine stains and smells from bedding
Updated · By the Luniva team
Quick answer
Use Luniva Enzyme Powered (the pink one). Spray it directly onto the stain, leave it for 1–3 minutes, then wash as normal following the garment care label.
For washable fabrics only: sheets, pyjamas, mattress protectors, blankets and removable covers, not the mattress itself. Never apply directly to pets or skin.
Step by step
- 1
Strip and rinse
Take off the wet bedding or clothes and rinse the stained area in cold water.
- 2
Spray and wait 1–3 minutes
Spray Enzyme Powered until the area is wet through. Don't let it dry on the fabric.
- 3
Wash, then air-dry
Wash as normal, following the care label. Air-dry and check the smell has gone before tumble drying.
Bedwetting, potty training, a poorly relative or a pet accident on the bed: urine leaves yellow marks and a smell that can linger after a normal wash. On washable fabrics like sheets, pyjamas, mattress protectors, blankets and removable covers, Luniva Enzyme Powered is the one to use: rinse, spray, wait 1–3 minutes, then wash as normal.
Why the smell can stay after washing
Urine soaks deep into fabric and leaves residue in the fibres as it dries, and that residue keeps releasing odour. Rinsing removes what's on the surface, but what's left can turn into a yellow mark and a smell that comes back when the fabric gets warm or damp. Enzyme Powered helps remove odour-causing residues from washable fabrics, along with the unpleasant odours trapped within the stain.
Fabric guide
Best on washable everyday fabrics
Cotton, linen, denim, polyester and cotton blends: clothes, kidswear, bedding, towels and washable covers.
Test first on delicates
Patch-test an inconspicuous area on silk, wool, viscose, leather-trimmed items or anything labelled dry-clean only.
Don't let it dry
Spray, leave 1–3 minutes, then wash. Don't let the treated area dry out before washing.
Check before drying
Inspect the area after washing and repeat if any shadow remains. Dryer heat can set a leftover mark.
Urine & bedwetting: questions
Strip the bed, rinse the wet patch in cold water and leave everything ready for the morning. Treat with Enzyme Powered just before you wash, so the spray doesn't dry on the fabric. A washable mattress protector saves the mattress.
Often, yes. Spray until the mark is wet through, leave 1–3 minutes and wash. Very old marks may need a second treatment. Don't tumble dry until the mark and smell have gone.
Luniva is for washable fabrics, so use it on sheets, protectors and covers that go in the washing machine rather than on the mattress itself.
Luniva is bleach-free and ammonia-free. Keep pets and small children off treated items until they're washed and dry, and never apply it directly to pets or skin.
Pink. Urine is an organic stain, which is what Enzyme Powered is for.
Based on controlled laboratory testing. Performance may vary by stain type, fabric, age of the stain and wash conditions. Always follow the garment care label and test an inconspicuous area first.
