How to remove chocolate stains
Updated · By the Luniva team
Quick answer
Use Luniva Enzyme Powered (the pink one). Spray it directly onto the stain, leave it for 1–3 minutes, then wash as normal following the garment care label.
Scrape off any lumps of chocolate gently with a blunt edge before spraying.
Step by step
- 1
Spray directly
Apply Luniva to the stain until saturated. No rubbing, no pre-soak.
- 2
Wait 1–3 minutes
Active Enzymes break the stain down at the molecular level. Don't let it dry.
- 3
Wash as normal
Machine-wash as normal. Air dry; never tumble dry until you've confirmed the stain is gone.
Chocolate is a triple stain: cocoa butter (fat), milk solids (protein) and cocoa pigment. Detergent alone usually leaves a pale brown shadow behind. Luniva's protease + lipase blend digests the fat and protein in 1–3 minutes, then lifts the pigment cleanly – no bleach, no scrubbing.
Why chocolate leaves a brown shadow
Cocoa butter melts into fabric fibres on contact and traps the cocoa pigment inside. A normal wash removes the surface but leaves the embedded fat – which oxidises and yellows over time. Lipase active enzymes are the only reliable way to break the fat down at room temperature.
Fabric guide
Best on washable everyday fabrics
Cotton, linen, denim, polyester and cotton blends: clothes, kidswear, bedding, towels and washable covers.
Test first on delicates
Patch-test an inconspicuous area on silk, wool, viscose, leather-trimmed items or anything labelled dry-clean only.
Don't let it dry
Spray, leave 1–3 minutes, then wash. Don't let the treated area dry out before washing.
Check before drying
Inspect the area after washing and repeat if any shadow remains. Dryer heat can set a leftover mark.
Chocolate: questions
Yes. Scrape off any solid chocolate, spray Luniva, wait 1–3 minutes and wash as normal, following the garment care label. Repeat once for set-in cocoa.
Both. Dark chocolate has more pigment, milk chocolate has more protein – Luniva's combined active enzyme blend handles either.
Yes – Nutella adds hazelnut oil to the chocolate, which makes it the kind of greasy food stain Luniva is built for.
Standard detergent leaves the cocoa butter behind, which oxidises into a pale brown mark. Luniva's lipase digests the fat layer.
Yes. Bleach-free and colour-safe – designed for everyday family laundry.
Based on controlled laboratory testing. Performance may vary by stain type, fabric, age of the stain and wash conditions. Always follow the garment care label and test an inconspicuous area first.
